    Description

A teardrop face in hammered sterling silver, oxidised so the hollows go dark, with a bronze tulip laid across it in relief — stem, opening bloom, two leaves, a cluster of berries, and a bronze bead at the point where the teardrop narrows. A bronze rim runs the whole way round the face and closes the composition. The silver ground is struck by hand before the tulip is set, so the flower sits on a surface that already has movement in it. That order matters: hammer marks made around a motif look like decoration, hammer marks made under it look like ground. The oxidation is then worked into the hollows and polished off the peaks, which is why the field behind the tulip reads as depth rather than as a flat dark plate. The tulip is the flower of Ottoman Istanbul, worked into tiles, textiles and stone across four centuries, and its Turkish name — lâle — was traditionally linked to the letters of the divine name, which is part of why it recurs so persistently in the decorative arts here. On this ring it is treated as a single stem rather than a repeating pattern, closer to the way it appears on a tombstone or a tile border than on printed cloth. The shoulders are pierced. Instead of a solid shank rising to the face, the silver opens into cut-out shapes on each side, hammered on the surface and darkened in the openings. This does two things: it drops a good deal of weight from a ring with a face this size, and it stops the piece from looking top-heavy where the band meets the teardrop. Two metals, two ways of ageing. The silver keeps its oxidised contrast and brightens on the raised marks with wear. The bronze tulip will deepen to a warmer, browner tone over the months — that patina is the reason for using solid bronze rather than a plated finish, and a bronze-safe polish brings it back to bright whenever you prefer it. Made by hand in our Cappadocia workshop. The hammering and the set of the tulip differ on every piece.

    FAQs

What metals is this ring made of?

The hammered face, the band and the pierced shoulders are solid 925 sterling silver. The tulip, the bead at the point and the rim around the face are bronze. Nothing on this ring is plated — both metals are solid.

Will the bronze tulip darken over time?

Yes, and that is intended. Solid bronze develops a warm brown patina with wear — it is not tarnish and it is not a fault. Most people prefer it as it settles, but a bronze-safe polish returns it to bright gold in a minute if you want the contrast sharp.

Is the tulip applied or engraved into the surface?

Applied. It is a separate bronze element in relief, set onto a silver ground that was hammered first, so it stands proud of the surface and casts its own shadow across it. It is not stamped or engraved into the face.

Why are the shoulders cut out?

Weight and balance. A solid shank under a face this size makes the ring heavy and top-heavy at the same time. Piercing the shoulders removes metal exactly where it is not needed, so the teardrop sits steady rather than tipping.

Does the ring rotate on the finger?

The shoulders widen well before they reach the face, which spreads the load and keeps the teardrop pointing where you set it. As with any large-faced ring, a size that fits snugly rather than loosely will hold its position best.

    What does the tulip mean?

It was the flower of Ottoman Istanbul, and appears on tiles, textiles, manuscripts and gravestones from the sixteenth century onward. Its Turkish name, lâle, shares its letters with the divine name in Arabic script, which is traditionally given as the reason it carries more weight in Ottoman decoration than any other flower.

What ring sizes are available, and can it be resized?

Available sizes are shown in the size selector. If yours is not listed, message us before ordering and we will make it to measure in the workshop.

    How do I clean it?

A dry polishing cloth on the raised hammer marks and on the tulip. If dust collects in the pierced shoulders, rinse under warm water with a soft brush and dry it fully. Never use a liquid silver dip — it strips the oxidation and attacks the bronze.

    Where is it made?

In our own workshop in Cappadocia, Turkey. The face is hammered, the shoulders pierced and the bronze tulip set by the same silversmith, so no two rings are exactly alike.
